ORBA members continue to promote a reasonable and responsible approach to the protection of the environment and Ontario's natural resources. Here are some of the current environmental issues ORBA is working on:
ORBA supports reasonable and responsible environmental protection and improvements to excess soil management and an effective process for governing beneficial reuse and the disposing of contaminated material. ORBA has been involved in the excess soil revision since the beginning, including providing comments on the Excess Soil Management Policy Framework in 2016, and participating in the Excess Soil Management Group since 2017.
The most recent changes to the management of excess soil under the *O. Reg. 406/19; On-site and Excess Soil Management were implemented on January 01, 2021. Some of the major policy changes include: site-specific reuse regulations, excess soil "waste designation", as well as the creation of an excess soil registry.
The Environmental Management Practices guidance Manual is intended to support members' efforts in the achievement of environmental protection goals. The manual is intended to serve as a general information resource to members that provide construction services on bid-building contracts.
ORBA advocates for responsible environmental protections, including adaptive management when dealing with erosion and sedimentation. ORBA has been involved in the ongoing process of updating the erosion and sedimentation controls by Ministry of Environment, Parks, and Conservation, and has taken part in numerous stakeholder consultations.
More recently in the summer of 2020, ORBA hosted an internal erosion and sedimentation working group, which reviewed and provided feedback on several proposed changes to temporary E&S control measures.
ORBA is following all legislative updates on this issue very closely and advocates for reasonable and responsible environmental protections when it comes to endangered species protection, and habitat conservation and rehabilitation.
