ORBA scholarships are presented annually to two high school and two post-secondary students who are enrolled in a civil engineering program at an Ontario university or a civil technology or technician program at an Ontario college. The recipients are recognized at ORBA’s annual Convention.

The 2019 recipients were recognized by ORBA president, James McVeety, during the Awards Breakfast at ORBA’s annual Convention. Videos were presented of each scholarship recipient highlighting the next generation of road builders. Congratulations:

Joe Bunting College Scholarship
Honouring his dedication to and active involvement in ORBA’s training and education activities, the Joe Bunting Scholarship is awarded annually to a student attending an Ontario college and entering their final year of a Civil Engineering Technology/Technician program.
Joe Bunting was known for his dedication to the training and education of young people in the industry. Joe served as Chair of ORBA’s Education Committee from the late 1990s through to the mid-2000s. He was a champion of the ‘Civil Construction Management Education Series’ which was a joint program run out of Ryerson University. Joe was also a significant supporter of the Road Building Academy concept and took an active interest and role curriculum development, interviewing and selecting instructors and opening courses in person at Ryerson. Joe worked in management for Warren Paving most of his career, moving to Miller Paving in his final work years.

J.D. Chick University Scholarship
Honouring his commitment to ORBA as its first President, the J.D. Chick Scholarship is awarded annually to a student attending an Ontario University and entering their final year of a Civil Engineering discipline. Becoming ORBA President in 1927, J.D. served as President of Chick Construction, one of the biggest road builders in Ontario in the 1920s and 30s. The companies’ business grew in the 1940s, securing contracts for work on the Alaska Highway in B.C.
Who is eligible: Ontario university student entering their final year of a Civil Engineering discipline.
ORBA College Civil Engineering Technology Scholarship
Who is eligible: Ontario high school student entering their first year of a program in Civil Technology at an Ontario College.
ORBA University Civil Engineering Scholarship
Who is eligible: Ontario high school student entering their first year of a program in Civil Engineering at an Ontario University.
